Summer Holidays…

Hello

Summers…

As per super informative power google Summer is the hottest of the four temperate seasons, falling after spring and before autumn. In summer, the days are longest and the nights are shortest, with day-length decreasing as the season progresses. The date of the beginning of summer varies according to climate, tradition and culture.

But for me, summers meant summer holidays, holidays fun at Nani house, and yes a big pile of summer homework…

I remember my summer holidays were full of travel, fun and masti with cousins. I am sure you all remember your summer holidays fun. Remember the last day of school before holidays, we all used to be excited to go to different places for exploring the different culture and tradition. You remember the ‘barf ka gola’ (chuski, crushed ice lolly) the street food, i think we all liked it very much because the real fun of life is in streets, and not in five star royal restaurants.

For me, Summers were for my Nani house visit at Roorkee near Haridwar, in the state Uttrakhand. Roorkee is famous for IIT. It is one of the renowned institute among public engineering institutes in India. Whenever we visit our nani house, the most compulsory visit is to IIT, the big campus always attract us and the main white building of the campus brightens its beauty.

The weather of Roorkee is always pleasant, we were always ready to go outside to eat chat while sitting on the bank of the GANGA. The cold water of GANGA has something magical, you forget all your problems while sitting, and immersing your feet in the water of GANGA. The view, flow of water, kids bathing in water, all that environment or atmosphere totally relaxes your mind and soul.

Summers are for Travel

Haridwar is approx 30-35 kms far away from roorkee, we always visit haridwar in summers. Haridwar is one of the pilgrimage site in North India. According to google Haridwar is regarded as one of the seven holiest places (Sapta Puri) to Hindus. According to the Samudra manthan, Haridwar along with Ujjain, Nashik and Prayag (Allahabad) is one of four sites where drops of Amrit, the elixir of immortality, accidentally spilled over from the pitcher while being carried by the celestial bird Garuda.

This description is for history, in simple words Haridwar is famous for its sacred ghats (bathing steps). Har Ki Pauri hosts an evening Ganga Aarti (river-worshiping ceremony) in which tiny blinking lamps(divas) are made to float off the steps. Worshipers fill the city during major festivals including the annual Kanwar Mela.

For hindus, Haridwar is a holy place and also recommeded as Gateway of God with Hari which means God and dwar meaning door. In hindu culture, the ritual of Asthi Visarjan or the immersion of a deceased person’s ashes and bones in the flowing waters of a holy river such as the Ganges. It is said that with the flow of ashes in the holy river, the soul of dead body directly go to Heaven.

And at the end of holidays, we all used to be worried about the pending holidays homework. Remember the feeling of fear of incomplete homework and the excitement to meet our friends after one or two months.

  1. Your post took me back in time when I used to go to Nani house during my summer vacations. I could totally relate to your post, eating my fav food prepared by my grandmom, traveling to nearby places and having lots of fun with cousins. And of course, who can forget the heaps of pending holiday homework. Such a lovely post!
